The reasoning behind every line — lesson prices, the VAT threshold, what a no-show costs, what the top of the range does differently — is in How much do driving instructors earn in Ireland?

How it is worked out

The sums, in plain words.

• Turnover is price × lessons a week × weeks a year. Prices are what the learner pays, VAT included.
• VAT comes off at 13.5% of what learners pay once turnover passes the €42,500 services threshold, the point at which you must register. Under it, nothing.
• Costs are the car per month × 12, fuel per week × lesson weeks, the franchise fee per lesson if you pay one, and the yearly line for insurance, ADI renewal, phone and accountant.
• No-shows are lessons lost and not paid for: the hour is worked, the fuel is spent, nothing comes in.
• Hours worked count every hour — lessons, no-shows and admin — so the hourly rate is honest.
• With Pam assumes reminders that ask for a reply halve the no-shows and Pam halves the admin; you choose how many of the hours back become lessons. Pam's own monthly price comes off. Illustrative, not advice; income tax, USC and PRSI come off the figure shown.
